Q&A With Grace Coddington

While Ed was in New York he had the chance to see The September Issue; a documentary by R. J. Cutler about the hectic and very private life of Anna Wintour, the legendary editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine. What is remarkable about this film is that Cutler was granted unprecedented access to Wintour’s world including a behind the scenes look at Fashion Week, photo shoots, exclusive closed-door staff meetings and (perhaps most notable) the two-decade relationship between Wintour and Grace Coddington, the infamous Creative Director and fashion genius behind Vogue magazine. Ed is such a huge fan that after seeing it for himself he encouraged some friends to go see it too. With a very casual interest (mainly stemming from Ed’s excitement) they went to the Clearview Theatre in Chelsea where The September Issue was playing. When it was all over and the lights came back on, who should walk up to the front but Grace Coddington and director R. J. Cutler. It was time for a question and answer period – a rare treat that, unfortunately, Ed had missed out on.
Luckily, his friend Mark Paulson managed to capture the entire interview for Ed (and now the world!) on his iPhone. Be forewarned: the clapping is much louder than the talking.

Furniture Fridays vol. 1

Every Friday the Clark + Huot blog will be updating readers on furniture design news and the progression of Staff Sofa 1, designed by Thom Fougere and Nils Vik of Keep it Cartesian.
Video one is Chris and Thom’s brief visit to JP furniture and repairs. Upon our brief meeting with the man himself, JP, I could tell you that he is quiet, hard working and old fashioned. Very old fashioned. Yet there seems to be an adventurous side to him. Despite the fact that in his 30 years of building furniture he had “never seen anything like this,” he was still willing to take on our challenging design – that is, after passively declaring the job to be impossible several times (both on and off camera). It was thanks to some persistence and reassurance of the fact that we were willing to do whatever it takes (give him money) to get the job done that changed the mind of the master craftsman.

A simple board game with beautiful design, extensive terminology (leaner, column, reaction, conversion, kiss, etc) and its own philosophy. Did I mention that it’s based on science? Magical science!
This game is based on the idea that polar opposite magnetic charges will repel. The object is to successfully balance one magnetic disc on another disc’s magnetic field (thus creating a “leaner”). Once you get good at this, you can start strategically placing your discs and leaners to cause your opponent to trigger a “reaction” (discs go crazy and stick to each other). This creates a “column” which means big points for whoever didn’t cause the reaction. It’s all very fun.
So naturally I brought it to work for everyone to enjoy. Here are some stills of our enjoyment (for your enjoyment).

Ed had just got back from New York and to our surprise, so did New York! And London. And France. Oh, and Tokyo.
I am talking, of course, about Industrial Facility’s “City in a Bag” for Muji. These wonderful and well designed wooden desk ornaments allow you to recreate some of the world’s most famous cities. Or, if you’re feeling creative, redesign some of the world’s most famous cities. Here’s what we did with them..
